Can the Mathematics used to study ecosystems be used to study growth of computer networks?

The Professor asked: This would include concepts of succession, adaptive radiation, predator-prey interactions, natural logs, and keystone species concepts. Relative to the keystone species (biological) would be the switching mechanism of a given telecommunications network. Interested in knowing if digital networks follow the same rules as predator prey systems and biological ecosystems.DONG
