What applications can I use to find and connect to nearby wifi networks?

I have an N1 network card that is backwards compatible with lower g standards on my pc, but despite my knowledge that there are other wifi networks nearby(other pcs in the same room detect and can connect to nearby networks with far inferior g network cards), my windows wireless zero configuration is not detecting the other wifi networks.

So what other program or programs can I use to detect and if possible connect to these wifi networks?

    plug it into my USB port and its a radar that shows u all the WIFI conencts around you. it works great
