So basically the iphone can be unlocked because you don’t have to buy it from the phone store, you can buy it from apple.

I have a verizon samsung u740 cdma phone. now this whole cdma/gsm thing is new to me so i wanted to know if i could just hack the phone to change the frequency to work on tmobile’s gsm network, or if i would have to change some component within the actual phone to change frequency.

Make sure people understand that branded/unbranded and locked/unlocked are two separate things. Your phone can be branded, but unlocked. Not 100% sure what happens if you take a branded/locked phone and flash it to an unbranded firmware, if it stays locked or not. t809 >> d820 for example.
But gsm unbranded/unlocked is the only way to go people.
