What are the copyright laws that restrain networks from broadcasting internationally?

Many (if not all) of the US television networks will not allow you watch their online episodes if you are outside of the US. ABC Family website says this is do to copyright laws. How does this work? Its the internet not another network.

I imagine the issue is that the network has not filed for copyright in the foreign country.
If they allowed the episode to be “watched” outside the U.S., then it could also be recorded at the same time, copies made, and sold outside the U.S. and the network would have no legal right to prevent this (thereby losing a lot of revenue).
